GameCube is Nintendo’s fourth major home video game console and a successor to the Nintendo 64. It was the first Nintendo console to use optical disks as the primary storage medium. Unlike its competitors, Sony PlayStation 2 and Microsoft Xbox, it used mini-DVD format instead of regular DVDs which resulted in console lacking DVD-player feature. The GameCube controller was drastically different from previous Nintendo controllers and used an asymmetrical design of its face buttons. The wireless version of the controller called WaveBird was released in 2002. The GameCube became Nintendo’s worst selling home console at the time with about 22 million copies sold worldwide. However, it was praised for its game library with many games gaining widespread acclaim from both critics and players.
