Atari Lynx 1999

Atari · 1989–1995 · 57 games all-time on RAWG

Atari Lynx is the first portable video game console made by Atari. It was released the same year as its main competitor, Nintendo’s Game Boy, was much more powerful and was the world’s first handheld console with a color LCD. However, it was a commercial failure for the company and sold only about 3 million units. The console was praised for its powerful hardware and innovative features such as zooming and distortion of sprites and multiplayer for up to eight players. However, it also was criticized for its high price, big size, short battery life, and small game library. The console’s controls included a D-pad, four action buttons (two for left-handed mode and two for right-handed) and five system buttons: on, off, restart, option 1 and option 2. 74 games were released for the system which included arcade ports, adaptations from the other consoles as well as original games. Some of the most popular and well-received games for the system include Chip’s Challenge, Gauntlet, Ninja Gaiden, Battlezone 2000 and S.T.U.N. Runner among others.
