GameCube 2002

Nintendo · 2001–2007 · 673 games all-time on RAWG

GameCube is Nintendo’s fourth major home video game console and a successor to the Nintendo 64. It was the first Nintendo console to use optical disks as the primary storage medium. Unlike its competitors, Sony PlayStation 2 and Microsoft Xbox, it used mini-DVD format instead of regular DVDs which resulted in console lacking DVD-player feature. The GameCube controller was drastically different from previous Nintendo controllers and used an asymmetrical design of its face buttons. The wireless version of the controller called WaveBird was released in 2002. The GameCube became Nintendo’s worst selling home console at the time with about 22 million copies sold worldwide. However, it was praised for its game library with many games gaining widespread acclaim from both critics and players.

Some of the most notable of them include: Paper Mario: A Thousand-Year Door, Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem, Metroid Prime, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, Pikmin, and Super Monkey Ball among others. The best-selling game on the console is Super Smash Bros. Melee. The game sold 7 million copies and had an active tournament community up to this day.

Why some games have no rating

RAWG publishes an average score only once a game has collected 6 or more user votes. Below that it returns 0.0 — while still returning the full vote breakdown. So a game nobody has ever rated and a game with five “exceptional” votes arrive looking identical.

Those suppressed scores are recomputed from the breakdown, which recovers 5 of the 21 games here that would otherwise read as unrated. The rest have no votes at all — mostly obscure, regional or unported titles. That is a real absence, not a gap in the fetch: there is nothing to retrieve.

Everything with a vote ranks in one table, because the order is weighted rather than a raw mean: a score is shrunk toward this set's mean of 3.88 in proportion to how thin its evidence is, so a two-vote 5.0 settles near the middle instead of on top. Metacritic joins at half that weight where it exists — 8 of these games have one.

Ranked 18 games with at least one vote

Ordered by a weighted score, not the raw mean: each game's own average is shrunk toward this set's mean of 3.88 in proportion to how few votes it rests on, and Metacritic is folded in at half that weight where it exists. A 6-vote 4.67 therefore ranks below a 2,100-vote 4.45 — the raw figure is shown under each score, and sorting by raw score ignores the weighting entirely.

Bars show how the votes split — Exceptional, Recommended, Meh, Skip. A ~ on the raw figure marks a score recomputed from a breakdown RAWG suppresses.
